The Black Keys on Writing Their Sixth Studio Album Brothers

College dropouts, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney teamed up to form the American blues and rock duo, The Black Keys. They emerged in the rock music scene in 2001 with their debut album The Big Come Up. The band has already released six studio albums and has gained popularity over the years. The album debuted at no. 3 on the Billboard 200 and about 73,000 copies were sold in the first week of release. It is the band’s highest charting album to date and in January 2011, Brothers became a certified Gold by the RIAA as it shipped more than 500,000 copies.

The first single of the album ‘Tighten Up’ is The Black Keys’ most successful single yet. It’s their first charting song and it reached no. 1 on the Alternative Songs and Rock Songs charts. On an interview with Dan Auerbach, he said it was the last song they did for the album. Having written The Black Keys lyrics, Dan, Patrick, and Brian (Danger Mouse) went to the studio and tried to come up with a tune for it. ‘Tighten Up’ has then been licensed to appear in the FIFA 11 video game, Gossip Girl television series, Subaru commercial, as well as in films such as I Am Number Four and Bad Teacher.

The Black Keys have evolved over the years and record after record, their music has gotten even better. They brought in elements of jazz, hip hop, and funk into their blues and rock music. Mostly self-produced, the Black Keys lyrics are also mostly self-written. The front man of The Black Keys, Dan Auerbach has become more experimental on writing and their instrument mix.
