Janet Jackson Tickets: More About Janet Jackson
The singer, songwriter, and actress Janet Damita Jo Jackson was born May 16, 1966 in Gary, Indiana. Janet Jackson was born into a musical family being the youngest out of the nine children born to parents Joseph Walter Jackson and Katherine Jackson. Jackson grew up in the influence of show business with her brother mega-celebrity King of Pop Michael Jackson and their family pop group the Jackson 5 which included her older siblings Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael. Janet Jackson began performing as a child in the series “The Jacksons” and was more known in the field of acting rather than singing. She has appeared on different TV shows which include Good Times, Different Strokes, and Fame.
At 16, Janet was forced by her father to join her brothers and sing professionally. She signed a recording contract with A&M in 1982, and released her self-titled debut album in the same year. The album hit the No. 84th spot on the pop charts. It included the hit singles “Give Your Love to Me” and “Young Love”. Her follow-up album “Dream Street” featured some contributions from her brothers Jackie, Marlon, Michael, and Tito and sold about 250,000 copies. At age 18 she eloped with Jame De Barge, a musician of the group De Barge. Janet’s parents disapproved of the marriage so it was then annulled in January 1985. Even when faced with criticism for her limited vocals, Janet Jackson became a pop icon for her third album “Control”, which was released in 1986. This started her long time collaboration with record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Control featured two number one singles “What Have You Done for Me Lately” and the title track. The album sold about 8 million copies worldwide. She was nominated for three Grammy awards and won two out of her nine American Music Awards nominations.
Janet did not release another album until 1989 with “Rhythm Nation 1814”, an album she made about what’s going on in the world. The album sold more than Control as it reached 12 million copies and has own 14 Billboard Music Awards. She set a record by being the first and only artist to score 7 top 5 hits from one album. In 1993 she released her album “Janet”, and is often referred to by many as Janet’s ‘sex album’. The album became a huge success as it made Jackson the first female artist to enter the Billboard Top 200 albums charts, and at number one. After the success of “Janet”, she re-negotiated with Virgin Records for $80 million in 1996. This made her the highest paid recording artist of all time. In October 1997, she released her next album “The Velvet Rope”. “All for You” was released in 2001 with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and it featured songs that deal with romance, sex, and living a single life. The title track “All For You” was Janet’s second biggest hit and her second single “Someone to Call My Lover” hit the Top 5 of the Pop charts. Janet’s eight studio album “Damita Jo” was released in 2004 with its first single “Just a Little While” but the album failed to live up to her previous albums. Janet faced controversy in 2004 while performing during the halftime show during the Super Bowl XXXVIII, when Justin Timberlake accidentally exposed her right breast. She was also criticized for lip-synching.
Surpassing the Super Bowl controversy, the pop icon, who is now 45, is currently on tour for her Janet Jackson Number Ones: Up Close and Personal World Tour. She described as her largest world tour in support of her second compilation album “Number Ones” in celebration of her 35 number one hits. The year-long tour from February 2011 through November 2011 was ranked 45th in the Top 50 Worldwide Tour in Pollstar as it earned more than $15 million from Janet Jackson tickets.
